Green social prescribing is an innovative approach that integrates nature-based activities into healthcare to improve mental and physical well-being. Despite its growing popularity in recent years , there are several myths that surround how effective it really is. This article aims to debunk these myths, highlight what the true benefits are , and support with UpToDate research.
Myth 1 – it only benefits Mental health
It is very true , at PIER allotment where our green social prescribing programme takes place, we have seen first-hand the mental health benefits of individuals being involved in nature-based activities and having access to green space
BUT …
It also has a positive impact on physical health too . By its very nature, nature-based activities involve exercise and thus, through a personalised approach to accessing activities, can indeed benefit an individual’s physical health.
Myth 2 – it’s just a trend and won’t take off
There are some that might suggest Green Social prescribing is a GPs way of getting you out of the surgery and getting you to “go for a walk” instead of having an appointment with a health professional.
BUT…
Whilst it is well documented that being outside, having access to green space and gentle walking has multiple benefits, Green Social prescribing is gaining much support and recognition across health sectors across the world . The NHS has invested in pilot programmes to integrate it into mainstream healthcare.
Myth 3 - It isn’t accessible for all
Finally, there is a myth that Green Social Prescribing isn’t accessible for everyone . This perhaps stems from concerns regarding the practical challenges of implementing these programs .
BUT …
At Petrus, and in the wider context of the GSP community, the Social and therapeutic horticultural practitioners work hard to ensure that their programmes are accessible to all . This is done via thorough referral systems, and where necessary and appropriate , having additional support to ensure that anyone who does want to take part, can take part in nature-based activities and experience the benefits of GSP
Petrus Green Social Prescribing is sited at PIER allotment, Belfield Road, Rochdale .
